About Pure O
Pure O OCD (also known as Pure Obsessional OCD) is a subtype of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in which an individual experiences distressing, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) but does not typically engage in visible compulsions or rituals. Unlike typical OCD, where compulsive behaviors are easily noticeable (like hand-washing, checking, or cleaning), the compulsions in Pure O are mental rather than physical. Common themes include fears of harming others, moral doubts, sexual or religious concerns, or existential anxiety. People with Pure O OCD can experience significant distress, anxiety, and feelings of guilt or shame due to the nature of their obsessions. Because the compulsions are internal, the person may seem to be functioning normally on the outside, but internally, they may be overwhelmed with the need to constantly “resolve” their obsessions. If you or someone you know is struggling with Pure O OCD, reaching out to a therapist with experience in treating OCD can be a crucial step toward recovery.
