Ego-Syntonic Thoughts
Thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that are aligned with a person’s self-image, values, and beliefs. They feel natural, acceptable, or “right” to the individual.
What this looks like:

The person does not see the thought as problematic.

They feel “this is just how I am.”

There’s little or no internal conflict.
Ego-Dystonic Thoughts
Thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that are in conflict with a person’s self-image, values, or desires. They feel intrusive, unwanted, distressing, or “not me.”
What this looks like:

The person recognizes the thought as problematic.

Often causes guilt, shame, or anxiety.

Creates internal struggle: “Why am I thinking this?”
