About Sexual Orientation OCD
Sexual Orientation OCD (SO-OCD), sometimes referred to as Homosexual OCD (HOCD) when it specifically involves concerns about being gay, is a type of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in which individuals experience intrusive, distressing thoughts about their sexual orientation. These thoughts can lead to excessive doubt, confusion, and fear about one’s sexual identity, even though the person does not actually want to act on the thoughts or feel any genuine attraction to the same sex (or opposite sex, depending on the case). These worries may involve fear of being attracted to someone of the same sex, even though the person has no genuine sexual attraction to them, doubts about being attracted to the opposite sex or not being truly heterosexual, and imagining or visualizing sexual scenarios that trigger anxiety or discomfort, especially involving people of the same sex.
People with Sexual Orientation OCD may worry that they are secretly gay, bisexual, or have an attraction to someone of the same sex, despite their beliefs, past behavior, or actual sexual attractions pointing to a different orientation. These doubts and the anxiety they cause can interfere significantly with daily life and relationships.
